The divorce rate
in UAE is at 46% the highest amongst the
GCC and it is alarming due to many reasons mainly , the nationals represent just 20% of the total population ,
thus a stable rise in national birth
rates is found to be critical as well
as the stability found in the family
unit is very important to ensure that a
stable home environment is being
given to the children to grow . The rise
in divorce rates casts negative impact on birth rates as well as stable
environment in the home (Awadhi, 2007). Socio-economic changes result in metamorphosis
within the society’s landscape and this is happening at very rapid pace that
some people are unable to grasp its impacts on their lives. One the other hand
economic growth also results in society being much more materialistic and rise
in material wants has increased. Thus this is becoming a burdening factor in
marriages and there is seen a rise in the dowry expectations as well as wedding
costs. There are social factors that also trigger divorce for example
unrealistic expectations , which means people
getting married without understanding
and additionally there is lack of compatibility amongst couples too (Awadhi, 2007).

Rise in divorce
rates has been blamed on financial pressure, social media as well as lack of
communication by the counselors in UAE. There are changes in the expectations
of newlyweds married life which has resulted in rise in divorce rates. The divorce
cases have increased by 7% between 2009 and 2011 in case of Emirati couples in
Dubai as well as Ajman. The official stats also indicate as rise in the number
of divorces by 4% from 2351 to 2443 within time span of 2012 to 2013 (Webster, 2015). A better
statistical method has been used for refined divorce rate and by using this method
the rate of divorce in Abu Dhabi for UAE nationals was 14.2 in 2010 whereas the
rate of divorce was 19.4 for US in 2010. This rate is found to be relatively higher
as well as it is certainly higher from the past generation. There are found to
be several reasons that cause higher divorce rate which include changing expectations
in marriage and now a days happiness is a crucial factor in marriage. Young couples
get exposed to various ways of thoughts in marriage. They think that marriage
needs to make them happy and if it doesn’t then they get divorced (Webster, 2015).

According to the
topmost statistician at the Electronic Litigation and Registration Department
the divorce rates in Emirati couples has declined by 8.7% in Abu Dhabi in 2015.
Approximately 33% of the divorces happened in the emirate of Abu Dhabi amongst
the UAE nationals in the very first year of marriage (Altaher, 2016). Mostly the divorce statistics re
either measured in incorrect manner or interpreted in a wrong manner by private
companies/ individuals. 72 % of Emirati women who got divorced in 2015 were in
the age group 15-35 while 24.4 % of them were between 25-30 years old. As
opposed to popular belief having multiple
wives, marrying the relatives as well as infertility are not some of the common or key reasons for divorce
The three major causes of
divorce in 2014 were disagreement ( 17 percent), having different
moods (5.5 percent) as well as temperaments
along with higher number of problems
in the marriage (4.9 percent) (Altaher, 2016).
Just 25 % of Emiratis who got divorced in 2015 were found to be related
prior to their marriage. The correct way to calculate percentage of divorce is
to find the marriage breakdowns that take place in correspondence to the year
in which the couple got married.
