The divorce rate in UAE  is at 46% the highest amongst the GCC and it is alarming due to many reasons mainly , the nationals  represent just 20% of the total population , thus a stable  rise in national birth rates is found to be  critical as well as  the stability found in the family unit  is very important to ensure that a stable  home environment is being given  to the children to grow . The rise in divorce rates casts negative impact on birth rates as well as stable environment in the home (Awadhi, 2007). Socio-economic changes result in metamorphosis within the society’s landscape and this is happening at very rapid pace that some people are unable to grasp its impacts on their lives. One the other hand economic growth also results in society being much more materialistic and rise in material wants has increased. Thus this is becoming a burdening factor in marriages and there is seen a rise in the dowry expectations as well as wedding costs. There are social factors that also trigger divorce for example unrealistic expectations , which means people  getting married without understanding  and additionally there is lack of compatibility amongst couples too (Awadhi, 2007).

Rise in divorce rates has been blamed on financial pressure, social media as well as lack of communication by the counselors in UAE. There are changes in the expectations of newlyweds married life which has resulted in rise in divorce rates. The divorce cases have increased by 7% between 2009 and 2011 in case of Emirati couples in Dubai as well as Ajman. The official stats also indicate as rise in the number of divorces by 4% from 2351 to 2443 within time span of 2012 to 2013 (Webster, 2015). A better statistical method has been used for refined divorce rate and by using this method the rate of divorce in Abu Dhabi for UAE nationals was 14.2 in 2010 whereas the rate of divorce was 19.4 for US in 2010. This rate is found to be relatively higher as well as it is certainly higher from the past generation. There are found to be several reasons that cause higher divorce rate which include changing expectations in marriage and now a days happiness is a crucial factor in marriage. Young couples get exposed to various ways of thoughts in marriage. They think that marriage needs to make them happy and if it doesn’t then they get divorced (Webster, 2015).

According to the topmost statistician at the Electronic Litigation and Registration Department the divorce rates in Emirati couples has declined by 8.7% in Abu Dhabi in 2015. Approximately 33% of the divorces happened in the emirate of Abu Dhabi amongst the UAE nationals in the very first year of marriage (Altaher, 2016). Mostly the divorce statistics re either measured in incorrect manner or interpreted in a wrong manner by private companies/ individuals. 72 % of Emirati women who got divorced in 2015 were in the age group 15-35 while 24.4 % of them were between 25-30 years old. As opposed to popular belief  having  multiple  wives, marrying the relatives as well as infertility  are not some of the  common or key reasons  for divorce  The three major causes  of divorce  in 2014 were  disagreement ( 17 percent), having different moods (5.5 percent) as well as temperaments  along with higher number of problems  in the marriage (4.9 percent) (Altaher, 2016).  Just 25 % of Emiratis who got divorced in 2015 were found to be related prior to their marriage. The correct way to calculate percentage of divorce is to find the marriage breakdowns that take place in correspondence to the year in which the couple got married.
